Find out about a Thomas Adams education
Thomas Adams is a co-educational community school, sixth form and boarding house in the centre of Wem with an outward-facing approach to education. It was formed by the amalgamation of local schools dating back to 1650, when Sir Thomas Adams founded the Free School of Wem.
There are two main sites on our 30-acre campus. Lowe Hill is tailored for Years 7-11, providing excellent facilities for all curricular areas. At the Noble Street site, we have our sixth form, housed in the attractive grammar school building.
Adams House is our thriving boarding house, welcoming up to 60 students from the UK and abroad. By selecting Adams House, parents are choosing top quality boarding care, with staff who are absolutely committed to the wellbeing of young people.
We are proud to remain a community school in ethos and belief, and we aim to help all students of all abilities fulfil their potential. We currently have circa 1,200 students on roll, around 60% of whom come to school on buses from the extensive surrounding rural area.
Recent Ofsted inspection reports graded the overall effectiveness of both the school and boarding house as ‘Good’ in all areas but we are never complacent and are dedicated to achieving the best for all our students.
The Thomas Adams values are ‘Respect; Resilience; Success’. While targeting the best results, we understand that for young people to achieve their potential they need to feel happy, safe and respected. Therefore, our pastoral system is at the heart of everything we do. Our caring ethos, combined with close monitoring of attendance and progress, gives parents the reassurance that we will act promptly if concerned. Pastoral guidance and advice is complementary to academic rigour, allowing students to be fully supported in developing resilience throughout their journey towards success.Mark Cooper
